How Intense Pulsed Light Can Rejuvenate Your Sun Damaged Skin on Your Face, Neck and Chest

Skin damage from ultraviolet tanning lamps or the sun is different from what you get with normal aging skin. Ultraviolet light causes wrinkling of the skin, rough texture, age spots, and loss of elasticity. Similar changes can also happen to the superficial capillaries which can become those nasty thread veins and spider veins which can be quite difficult to camouflage.

Ultraviolet light causes wrinkling of the skin, rough texture, age spots, and loss of elasticity. It can take a long time for sun and ultraviolet tanning lights to do damage to your skin, and you might not see the effects until you are in your forties or fifties. Your skin is very good at repairing itself. But that won't last forever. When the capacity for your skin to repair and renew is exhausted the effect of sun damage can make you look a lot older in just a matter of months.

Treatments like dermabrasion, CO2 laser resurfacing, deep chemical peels are pretty effective but their main problems is the long down time. You can also get serious problems like hyper or hypo pigmentation, infection and permanent scars.

Intense pulsed light is an excellent way to help your sun damaged skin regain a more youthful look, and it doesn't have a long recovery period. You can get a mild crusting that last from one to three days after you've been treated, but this only happens in a minority of clients.

Do you have problems with brown marks on your face from pregnancy (melasma)? IPL can help with this if the melasma isn't too deep. The depth of your melasma can found out with the help of an ultraviolet (black or Wood's light) which shines bright under UV light if the melasma is close to the surface of the skin, but there is no shine if the melasma is in the deep layers.

Redness for more than 4 hours is not common. Sometimes mild bruising occurs but it doesn't leave any permanent pigment changes. Mild facial swelling for one to three days affects about one in every six people treated.

Although Intense Pulsed Light machines are safe when used correctly by a well trained doctor, in the wrong hands they can do a lot of damage which might leave you with permanent scars.
