Preparing The Way For Moving

Some moves are highly anticipated. These would be moves to a bigger home or one that is a just a few miles away. The move to another state where you have never lived before can make moving a stressful occurrence. It will effect children the hardest because they will be leaving behind friends, schools, and activities that they have enjoyed all their lives.

Who can blame the children for feeling as they do, when even the parents are somewhat apprehensive. In most cases the reason for relocation is having a parent being promoted within their company and that promotion involves moving to new offices. It is usually an offer too good to pass up, but it means leaving an entire lifestyle behind.

Talk to the real estate agent at the new location, or look it up on the computer. The more you find out about where you are going, the less apprehensive you will be. Try and look at the entire experience as a great adventure and what fun it will be making new friends and finding out about all the exciting things there will be to do there.

One job that most family's dread is packing up the house. Give everything some consideration and separate the essential from the non-essentials. Even Christmas decorations can be replaced, so have a huge garage sale and get rid of most of the clutter. What doesn't sell can be donated to any number of charities.

Looking at the job as a whole seems like an awful lot of work. To make things move more easily begin packing up one room at a time. If you have had to employ the use of a moving company, they can provide boxes that are made especially to carry certain items. There are even heavy duty boxes with rods for clothes to be transported on their hangers.

A formal dining room would be an excellent place to start. This room is typically full of china and other glassware used only for special occasions. Pack it carefully and use adequate bubble wrap or paper to protect your goods from breakage. Clearly mark the box as to it's contents and write fragile in bold letters on any box holding breakable items.

If you only follow one piece of advice let it be the one that tells you to start early. Don't put off the packing even when the actual date you leave is weeks away. Rushing through this part of the move will only result in mass confusion for all involved. Little by little pack away everything not needed to get you through the next few weeks. The day before you leave, the family can eat out, and only the clothing and toiletries that will go into luggage should be left out.

See about having your new home professionally cleaned by a reputable company. Being able to immediately begin putting things away will save hours of work. Real estate agents often make arrangements to have all the utilities on and in your name. The sooner you can make a new location feel like home the better it is for everyone. Moving involves a lot of work but it also can be a great adventure. Involve the children in the process so they will look forward to it also.
